ENGINE

The engine initially installed was the Daimler Benz DB605-A1. Later the italian-licensed produced version was used, the Fiat RA1050 RC58 "Tifone"
Main features:
- 12 in-line, V-inverted, 60° engine
- with supercharger
- and gasoline direct injection

Benefits of direct injection systems:
- corrrect mixture in any flight condition
- lower risk of near-throttle icing
- less knocking
- more homogeneous mixture in the cylinder
- no backfire

Other features:

Performance chart

The diagram shows the typical 2-steps curve but running with a 1 stage compressor. The reason is that the compressor was gradually activated by a pressure sensor, starting from 2100 m up to 5700 m.

The pressure after the compressor, but before the pilot-controlled-throttle, was kept constant by another compensation throttle between them.

High pressure pump
Gasoline was compressed up to 85 bar by a Bosch mechanical pump with 12 pistons.

The pump was placed by the two cylinder heads.

Air-fuel mixture formation device

This device was connected to the pump and its task was to estimate the incoming air flow (function of throttle opening) from pressure (function of altitude), temperature and consequently to calculate the amount of gasoline needed for the combustion.
